1979 : Marianne Faithfull is arrested at the Oslo, Norway, airport for possession of marijuana.

2000 : Twelve-year-old Billy Gilman sings “One Voice” during festivities at the Dallas Cowboys-Minnesota Vikings football game. Gilman is joined by Jessica Simpson for the half-time show.

2008 : At long last, the much-delayed Guns N’ Roses album Chinese Democracy is released.

2009 : Little Richard has hip replacement surgery, which does not go well. The rocker will never walk again and remains in constant pain.

This Day in Music History — October 22

1964 : The Who (who are calling themselves the High Numbers at that time) audition for EMI Records, who choose not to sign them to a record deal.

1969 : Paul McCartney officially denies that he is dead.

1990 : The band Mookie Blaylock, which would soon be known as Pearl Jam, makes their stage debut at The Off Ramp in Seattle. In the audience are members of Soundgarden and Seattle Mariners pitcher Randy Johnson.

2008 : Guns N’ Roses release their first new material since 1999 when the title track of their new album Chinese Democracy is issued as a single. The band – with Axl Rose as the only original member – first performed the song in 2001.

2012 : Country music legend Garth Brooks is inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The ceremony includes honorary performances by George Strait, Bob Seger, and James Taylor. Brooks is reportedly sentimental and teary-eyed for the occasion.

1988 : Bobby McFerrin’s Don’t Worry Be Happy becomes the first acappella song to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

1988 : James Brown leads police on an hour-long, two-state car chase starting in Augusta, Georgia. Brown is arrested and eventually serves 2 years for a variety of charges.

1989 : Bob Dylan plays flute and recorder at the “L’Chaim – To Life!” telethon, backing up the band Chopped Liver with his son-in-law Peter Himmelman, who is married to Dylan’s daughter Maria.

1998 : Former Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler, 33, is sentenced to 150 days in jail for beating two women he dated and for violating his probation from an earlier domestic violence conviction.

2009 : Leonard Cohen performs a controversial concert at Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv, Israel. After announcing all proceeds from the concert will go to a charitable fund organized through Amnesty International, the group withdraws all involvement and Cohen is forced to make other arrangements. He dubs the performance “A Concert for Reconciliation, Tolerance and Peace” and creates a new charity of the same name, run by both Israelis and Palestinians, to distribute all profits to groups focused on coexistence in Israel.

This Day in Music History — September 10

1963 : While traveling in London, John Lennon and Paul McCartney encounter Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who worked as a promoter for The Beatles earlier in the year. Oldham invites them to The Stones rehearsal, where they complete a song they were working on, “I Wanna Be Your Man,” and give it to The Stones, which they use as their second UK single.

1988 : “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses hits #1 for the first of two weeks. The band is opening shows for Aerosmith at the time.

1990 : Starring a young rapper named Will Smith, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air debuts on NBC. Smith hones his acting skills during his six seasons on the show, which features guest appearances by his musical partner, DJ Jazzy Jeff.

1991 : Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is released as a single, forever changing the musical meaning of the word “Alternative.”
