New Orleans Jazz Fest reveals 2015 lineup

 

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has revealed its 2015 lineup. Elton John, The Who, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, and No Doubt are among this year’s headlining acts. They’ll be joined by other notable artists including Wilco, Ryan Adams, Widespread Panic, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Cliff, and Steve Winwood.

Also playing at the festival are John Legend, Jimmy Buffett, Hozier, Trombone Shorty, Dr. John, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Kacey Musgraves, Aaron Neville, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Kermit Ruffins, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Jimmy Vaughn, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Galactic featuring Macy Gray, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, The Meters featuring Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli, George Porter Jr., and Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste, Chicago, Ed Sheeran, Jerry Lee Lewis, The O’Jays, Estelle, Irvin Mayfield, The Word, Anders Osborne, and Shovels & Rope.

Jazz Fest takes place over the course of two weekends (April 24th – 26th and April 30th – May 3rd) at New Orleans’ City Park. Tickets to both weekends are available beginning Tuesday, January 13th through the festival’s website.

This Day in Music History — December 11

1957 : In what remains one of the most shocking celebrity scandals, Jerry Lee Lewis marries 13-year-old Myra Gale Brown, who was the daughter of his cousin (and bass player), J.W. Brown. The marriage lasts 14 years but seriously damages Lewis’ career.

1964 : Sam Cooke is killed at age 33 when the manager of the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles (where rooms cost $3 a night) shoots him three times. The manager claims that Cooke assaulted her and that he tried to rape his companion. The incident was ruled a justifiable homicide.

2012 : It is announced that Public Enemy is the fourth hip-hop act overall to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (the others that preceded PE into the Hall were Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Run-DMC, and the Beastie Boys). Other 2013 inductees were Rush, Heart, Albert King, Donna Summer, and Randy Newman.

2012 : Sitar maestro Ravi Shankar dies during surgery for a heart valve replacement in San Diego, California, at age 92. He was survived by two daughters, Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar. His son, musician Shubhendra Shankar, died in 1992.

This Day in Music History — December 4

1956 : At Sun Studio in Memphis, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis jam together on a few tunes. Johnny Cash shows up later to get in the picture and complete what will become known as the “Million Dollar Quartet.”

1969 : Jay-Z is born in housing projects in Brooklyn – something he will remind us of many times in his raps.

1971 : During a Frank Zappa concert, the Montreaux Casino in Switzerland catches fire when someone fires a flare gun, inspiring Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water.” Deep Purple were there to record their album Machine Head the following day, but ended up using the Grand Hotel and including the song as a last-minute addition.

1980 : Led Zeppelin makes it official: they will not continue after the death of their drummer John Bonham. They never fully reform, but do play some shows with Jason Bonham filling in for his father.

1993 : Frank Zappa dies of terminal prostate cancer at age 52 in Los Angeles, California.

This Day in Music History — September 29

1967 : John Lennon flips on the radio while working on I Am The Walrus and hears a BBC broadcast of the Shakespeare play King Lear, which he decides to mix into the song.

1976 : At his 41st birthday party, a drunk Jerry Lee Lewis attempts to shoot a soda bottle with his .357 Magnum and instead hits his bass player, Norman Owens, twice in the chest. Owens makes a full recovery.

1977 : #1 on the Hot 100 is Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band by Meco. It’s a 15-minute song made up of Star Wars music set to a disco beat. There’s even an R2-D2 bleeping solo.

1996 : Alanis Morissette finishes her first U.S. tour in Houston, Texas.

1997 : The Clinton White House awards Don Henley a National Medal of the Humanities for his work on the Walden Woods Project, which was set up to preserve the area in Massachusetts where Henry David Thoreau did his writing.

2003 : “Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne is released. The song will go on to peak at #21 in the US and #11 in the UK. It will also be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Vocal Pop Performance. The song’s infamous music video stars model/actress, Rachel Hunter, who plays Stacy’s mom and the obsession of her teenage daughter’s friend.
